Singing Comm_unity

In our project, community events are fundamental to bringing people together, sharing positive and empowering experiences and making new social connections. A central element of these empowering experiences is singing together.

In Ukrainian culture, songs have a sacred significance. They are not only an expression of artistic identity, but also a collective voice, embodying knowledge of social codes and connection to nature, ancient rituals and global culture. Feelings, experiences and positions are interwoven to convey the collective self-image. Songs are an instrument for remembering and passing on history and traditions, including the memory of the power of collective resistance across generations. In times of war and displacement, songs are a powerful tool for coping with loss and building resilience. They provide a bridge to home and a sense of emotional security.
In our community meetings, singing helped us to confront different emotions and strengthen both individual and collective voices. For many residents with little knowledge of Ukrainian, it also allowed them to connect with the language and to recognise that even singing in Ukrainian is an act of resistance. After all, the Ukrainian language is one of the central cultural codes that Russia has systematically suppressed for centuries and exploited for its colonial policy and current war against Ukraine.
